Bio

Josua Kim is a lyric leggero tenor who aims to communicate the meeting point of

text and music with clarity and sincerity. Born in Vienna to a father who studied

conducting, he grew up in a musical household and studied violin from age four

through his teens, which formed an early foundation for his vocal work. He is

especially interested in balancing sound and language on stage and in shaping

dramatic flow with thoughtful musical choices.

Recent highlights include covering Tito in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito with

Peabody Opera and appearing as the tenor soloist in a Beethoven Ninth Symphony

masterclass under Marin Alsop. In November 2025 he will perform Lippo in Kurt

Weill’s Street Scene at the Murphy Fine Arts Center. In Korea he appeared in the

summer gala One Summer Night Aria alongside leading professors and sang Buha

Jangsu in the new opera Maek at KT&G Sangsangmadang Chuncheon. In 2022 he

performed as Adogan, a courtier, in the new opera Heo Hwanghu at the Seoul

Arts Center. These productions and workshops deepened his approach to role

study, ensemble collaboration, and the intersection of music and drama in

rehearsal.

His Austrian birth naturally informs his devotion to art song. He especially loves

German Lieder—particularly the songs and cycles of Schubert—and explores how

prosody, accent, and imagery align with musical breath and pacing. Alongside

operatic work, he prepares art song programs that prioritize text-centered

storytelling and thoughtful repertoire planning.

He first studied musical theatre at Korea Art College, then completed voice

studies at Sejong University. He is currently continuing his vocal training at the

Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. Bridging careers in Korea and

the United States, he is steadily expanding his repertoire and stage experience and

is working toward becoming an excellent opera singer.
